What To Do When You Get A Cracked Windshield

12/14/2020

Imagine this: you’re aimlessly driving down the highway and suddenly a rock directly hits your windshield, immediately leaving a small, but noticeable crack. You don’t know what to do. If you choose to disregard the crack, sun exposure and extreme temperatures will cause the crack to spread and turn your small crack into a large crack that is now obstructing your field of vision. Windshield cracks, once this big, are extremely dangerous and could lead to you potentially being ticketed by a police officer. Not to mention, your windshield contributes greatly to the structural integrity of your vehicle and can cause your roof to cave in during a rollover accident.

Windshield cracks of any size should never be ignored and an appointment for repair should be made as quickly as possible, but there are a few temporary fixes.  First, you can wipe down the cracked area with a cloth. Then apply super glue in the cracks to prevent any dirt or moisture from getting in. This is important because dirt or moisture in the cracks can cause it to spread, making the crack irreparable.

Another simple way to temporarily fix the annoying crack is by avoiding the sun or any extreme temperatures in the area in which you live. The beating sun against the crack will cause it to spread and become a bigger problem. The same goes for extreme temperature changes. To avoid this as much as possible, try to park in a shaded area or garage until you can get the crack fixed. The chip is under two inches wide and less than ⅜ of an inch deep

Thanks for helping me understand that we need to park the car under a shaded area when there is a crack on the windshield. With that in mind, I should tell this, my brother, after he told me about the issue with his car this afternoon. He should do that until he finds a windshield replacement professional tomorrow after he found out that there was a crack when he got home this noon.

This morning, I was driving to work when I realized my windshield had a major crack near the driver's side, and I have no idea how that happened. It really helped when you explained how we'd temporarily repair a cracked windshield while we get it fixed by a professional, so I'll do that right now. Thanks for the information on why we must never neglect a damaged windshield.

Thank you for explaining that cracks should never be ignored no matter their size. My sister was telling me that she wasn't too worried about the crack in her windscreen that she found last night. I'll share this with her so she can be sure to get it checked soon.

I thought you made a good point when you talked about how you should never ignore a windshield crack of any size. Ignoring a windshield crack seems like a bad idea because it could obstruct your vision while you are driving. The sun could reflect off the crack in a weird manner and blind you temporarily.

I'm glad you brought up the importance of making appointments for windshield repair as soon as possible for cracks of any size. My younger brother was driving home from school yesterday when a rock flew up and cracked his windshield. I'll make sure he finds a reputable auto glass service to repair the crack by the end of the week.
