What terminology should I use to describe my broken windshield?

Windshield Chip Minnesota
  • Bullseye – round in shape, caused by larger debris and is generally not used to describe a chip.
  • Halfmoon Crack – similar to a bullseye but a chip or chunk of glass is broken out from the auto glass.
  • Small Crack – is smaller than a silver dollar coin. Generally, a small crack can be repaired unless it is in direct sight or on the edge of the windshield. Important! If you get a small crack in your windshield this should be handled immediately because it runs the risk of needing replacement due to expansion of the crack.
  • Combo Break – this is a few to several impressions that could be cracks or chips. Replacement may be needed based on depth and width or if greater than 3 impressions exist.
  • Edge Crack – when a crack or chip falls on the edge of the glass and moves toward the middle. This can vary in length, but 11 inches is an average for expansion of this type of crack.
  • Floater Crack – starts 2 inches from the windshield edge and looks similar to an edge crack.
  • Stress Fracture – this may happen as your windshield weakens overtime. Sometimes weather conditions will contribute to this growth of fractures in the auto glass.
  • Pitting – multiple tiny areas of chips.
  • Star Break – a small impact point that will generally spreads quickly, you may not see this immediately but you can feel it with your fingertip or finger nail.

Thank you for mentioning that a bullseye-like Halfmoon fracture occurs when a piece of vehicle glass is cracked, but a chip or chunk of glass does not. My windshield developed a half-moon fracture as I drove through a construction area. I'll look for a windshield glass replacement firm to help me replace my windshield.

Thank you for explaining about a floater crack. I've been wondering what kind of term I should be using when calling someone to help repair our windshield. I'm sure this is what we have, so I'll be sure to use this.

It was interesting to me when you mentioned that a Halfmoon crack occurs when a chunk of glass is broken out of the windshield. I would think that you would want to repair the broken chunk so that it doesn't cause web cracks to occur. It seems like this could cause the windshield to crack, so you would want to have a professional repair it as soon as possible.

Thanks so much for talking about the different types of windshield cracks and how to identify them. My partner has a large break in their windshield and we've been meaning to take it in to be repaired. It's grown to the point that I think we'll have to replace it so we'll have to be sure to take it into a place that knows how to do that properly.

I've got a crack on my windshield, but I'm not sure how to figure out if it's fixable. It's good to know that I can describe this as a combo break. It seems like I'll probably need to get it replaced.

Excellent written article for sure. There are many ways in which a windshield crack repair might be described. We get a lot of folks who have trouble telling us this simple fact. It's amazing. Anyway, thank you for the great article!

It really helped when you said that a small crack has to be fixed immediately because it can even lead to replacements when it expands. I will share this information with my husband after noticing a small issue on his windshield when I borrowed his car. He should take it to a crack repair shop as soon as possible if he wants to save money from replacement services.

I found it interesting when you said that impression of chips and cracks should be a sufficient reason to provide windshield solutions. My cousin told me the other night that his windshield got cracked by accidentally bumping their garage door. He asked if I had any idea what would be the best option to resolve the issue. Thanks to this informative article. I'll tell him it will be much better if he consults a trusted windscreen replacement service as they can provide more information about the best solution for his windshield problem.
